Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALFRED LEONARD MICHAEL POSALUKO
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dad, Alfred Leonard Michael Posaluko on February 8, 2026, at the wise age of 94.
He will be missed by his children, Anita (Sean), David (Heather, daughter Allie, sons, Nick and Ian), Steven (Lana), and by his granddaughter Leah (Corey). Al was predeceased by his sisters, Jean, Vicky, Rosemary, Elsie and his parents, Michael and Anne Posaluko.
He was born in Stead, Manitoba, and often related many fond memories of his life growing up. From the time he met Sargent Tommy Prince, when he was a boy, to being a teenager, hired as a Permit teacher, for a multi-age, one room school. He related, some of the students were practically his own age. Al completed his Bachelor of Arts, followed by his Bachelor of Education degree in 1963 from the University of Manitoba.
Our father had a life filled with many accomplishments and life adventures, such as his time with the Royal Canadian Airforce Reserves, and the Royal Canadian Army, as a civilian instructor to the cadets. He later became the director of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) in greater Winnipeg, where he met and married Myra, our mother. Al eventually ended up teaching school at Duck Bay and pioneered the introduction of secondary education in the community. He taught grade 9 "all subjects", but was best known for later teaching Geography and Phys. Ed at Charleswood Collegiate for many years. Dad was also a rough carpenter and utilized these skills doing minor home reno's and various projects. He was very creative and an amazing amateur artist. These skills were observed first hand, in the many snow sculptures and forts he crafted, to drawings he created, or etchings in concrete, on our freshly poured driveway.
Al's marriage to Myra eventually ended, and initiated another life chapter. Dad's ultimate joys in life were spending time with his family and celebrating with friends, always the extrovert and life of the party; he loved to laugh and had a mischievous sense of humour. He was an avid, fabulous dancer; his love of dancing eventually led to meeting Diane, in 2008. They shared these last years together dancing, attending social events, travelling, and taking drives through St. Vital Park.
Dad was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and often celebrated by playing Ukrainian music and wearing traditional clothing at special events. After retiring from teaching he later became a volunteer student chaplain, valuing the many souls he met along the way. Al was always up for many adventures, from his canoe trip to Lake Mantario, many camping expeditions, travels to China, the Caribbean and more. His active involvement in the West End senior's centre, led him to taking on the bold role of president for a number of years, one that he relished. Dad was also a story teller, who loved deep meaningful conversations and lived his faith. He regularly attended church, but also had an appreciation and admiration for other forms of worship and ceremony. Al attended sweat lodge, and participated in other Indigenous ceremony, whereby he was given the name "Red Bear"; he was extremely proud of this honour.
Al lived in the positive, where possibilities and miracles could happen, and he courageously approached his health challenges the same way. He would say, he had an amazing life, and was grateful for everyone he was able to share his time on earth with.
Family would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba and St. Boniface Palliative Care team, especially Dr. Anne Huot for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Al's life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., at Valour Community Centre, 1315 Strathcona Street. Please join us for sharing, storytelling and lunch to honour and celebrate our father.
In lieu of flowers, if friends or family so desire, donations in his memory may be made to Siloam Mission, a charity close to our dad's heart. A private interment will be held at a later date.
